Inclusiveness in testing: a social responsibility

Taking a test is an exciting time for most people. If you are dealing with a disability, such as dyslexia, autism, or low vision, it becomes extra challenging. For example, because you cannot read the assignments fluently. Optimum Assessment takes the issue of inclusivity extremely seriously. We believe that everyone deserves the same opportunities to obtain a diploma.

How can you pursue more inclusiveness in digital testing? How do you not exclude anyone and eliminate the limiting effects of, for example, a physical disability as much as possible? An important starting point is to create the right conditions for the candidate, without compromising the quality of the exam. No more than logical; after all, the adapted exam must remain at the same level as the regular exam. This preserves the value of the diploma.

Tips to increase equity of opportunity

Suppose someone is digitally literate and is going to take a test online. What measures can increase this person’s equity? There are several ways to organize this:

Tips!

Process

  • Prepare the candidate well for the examination process. This can be done by providing the candidate with additional instructions beforehand. For example, explaining how the test works.
  • Offer practice assignments in the digital environment of the test. This way, the candidate becomes more familiar with the virtual setting early on and this person feels more confident during the formal test.
  • Offer extra time and support during the taking of the exam. This support does not affect the level of the exam, but it does ensure that the candidate has the opportunity to take the exam on a par with a non-digibe.
Tips!

Systems engineering

  • Make the design of the test uncluttered. Consider a user-friendly test environment with clear directions and intuitive navigation. If the candidate experiences no technical barriers, he or she can focus entirely on the content of the test.

Access For All standard

To increase equity of opportunity, Optimum Assessment works with the “Access For All standard.

As an example, take a candidate with an eye condition. The ability to have the displayed texts read aloud can then be very helpful. This is also known as “narration.

If someone has difficulty seeing a different (or common) color spectrum, or a candidate is color-blind, the “High Contrast” application may be a lifesaver.

In the area of the “Access For All standard,” further development will take place in the coming years. We will also continue to research ways to further increase equity.

CSR

As part of corporate social responsibility, we minimize inequality by employing software testers through Specialized Brains. This organization performs testing work for Optimum Assessment. They employ individuals diagnosed with a form of autism. Their talents to test software very accurately come into their own at Optimum . This way, we support people with a distance to the labor market in their participation in society. Isn’t that a win-win? Inclusiveness, where everyone can flourish and feel seen and heard.

Growth opportunities for all

We see inclusivity in testing as our social responsibility at Optimum Assessment. We contribute to this in various ways, . In doing so, we offer equal growth for all.
