Digital assessment offers both challenges and opportunities. The transition to a digital assessment system goes beyond simply implementing new technology; you are creating a completely new method of knowledge verification and certification. The big question is: how do you generate support for this change and convince all stakeholders of its benefits? With 30 years of experience in digital assessment, we are happy to share some insights.

Stakeholder analysis: identification and understanding of those involved

Before you start implementing digital assessment, it is important to identify who the stakeholders are. From candidates and item constructors to managers and IT staff; everyone has a voice. These groups have different needs and concerns, and it is very important to understand them.

Effective communication: explain the advantages of digital testing

If you want to get people on board with change, you need to be able to explain why the change is necessary. So consider which benefits of digital assessment for your organisation. Is it efficiency through automation, for example via convenient workflow management? A better and higher-quality form of test construction or test administration? Lower administrative burdens? Ensure that you communicate these benefits clearly and attractively to every relevant stakeholder.

Right testing platform: ensure a good match

A crucial consideration when creating support for digital testing is choosing the correct test platform. Not every platform is suitable for your specific organisation or needs. Look for a platform that is not only reliable and secure, but also offers sufficient flexibility and scalability to meet your specific requirements. Whether it concerns certain reporting requirements, integration with existing (LMS) systems or certain accessibility options (such as audio description).

Training and support: the key to acceptance

Working with a (new) digital testing platform may sound overwhelming at first. This is certainly true for people who are less technically savvy. By offering targeted training and support, you can ensure that everyone feels comfortable with the new system and can use it in no time.

Involvement in decision-making: create ownership

Ensure that you involve relevant stakeholders – from exam designers to exam candidates – in the decision-making process surrounding the digital assessment process. Involve them in designing this process, allow them to provide feedback, and take their suggestions seriously. This will create a sense of ownership, which will only increase support for the process in the long run.

Pilot projects: the value of trial runs

Before fully implementing the digital assessment process, it is wise to run a pilot. In our previously written blog (‘phased introduction of digital testing’) we have already identified three types of pilot projects that can help you with this. This allows you to identify and resolve any problems at an early stage. What’s more, a pilot project like this can serve as a valuable example of how digital assessment works in practice!

Tip. Do you have multiple examination streams, for example? Consider introducing digital testing step by step and choose to start with just one of the examination streams.

Feedback iterations: learning and improving

As with any new system, there will be room for improvement in the area of digital assessment. But that is to be expected, as long as you learn and improve and continue to strive for the ultimate testing experience. Create mechanisms to regularly collect and implement feedback so that you can continuously improve the process.

Short- and long-term benefits: quick wins and long-term goals

Do not just emphasise the major, long-term benefits of digital testing. Make sure you also highlight the small, quick wins and share them with your team. Perhaps the test construction process will quickly become visibly more efficient, or perhaps examination candidates see their results more quickly. Sharing these quick wins can be a great motivator.
