What is formative assessment?

Schools and examination boards often use the term 'formative assessment'. But what exactly is formative assessment? Formative assessment focuses on both testing and learning, with the aim of helping candidates learn more effectively. For example, a mark is given, but this mark is only indicative and has no consequences for the candidate. This makes formative assessment a pleasant and effective way of learning.

Formative assessment – an example

In secondary education, final examinations are an important assessment moment. To prepare pupils properly, mock examinations are often held. Although pupils receive a mark for these tests, this mark does not count towards the final result. The purpose of the test is therefore to prepare pupils for the actual final test.

The actual final test in this example is a summative assessment.

Examples of formative assessments

Formative assessment takes place in all kinds of ways. Depending on where the assessment takes place, there are various descriptions of a formative assessment. These include the following terms:

Entry-level keys

At the start of a course or training programme, it can be useful to know the candidate's starting level. Entry tests can help to determine this. With this test, you can establish what the candidate already knows and where extra attention needs to be paid.

Diagnostic tests

If you want to focus on improving specific weaknesses of the candidate, diagnostic tests are a good option. For example, when determining the language level of a candidate who speaks another language.

Preliminary knowledge tests

Prior knowledge tests are designed to assess the candidate's prior knowledge. These tests enable you to determine what the candidate already knows about the subject of the test and what information still needs to be provided.

Sample examinations

Sample examinations can assist candidates in preparing effectively for the actual examination. These practice tests provide an example of what candidates can expect during the examination. This enables them to prepare more effectively, for example, when preparing for a mathematics examination.

Interim tests

During a course or training programme, interim tests may be administered to measure the candidate's progress. This allows you to determine whether the candidate is on the right track or whether certain topics require extra attention. At practical tests Interim tests, for example, are a good option.

Self-assessment tests

Self-assessment tests are tests that candidates take independently to test their knowledge. This type of test allows candidates to discover for themselves which topics they have not yet mastered and which require extra attention. Self-assessment tests are used, for example, when learning a new language.

Providing feedback on formative assessments

Good feedback is essential in formative assessment. Without feedback, the assessment does not fulfil its purpose. More information about giving feedback in formative assessment can be found in our providing feedback during formative assessment.

Candidates with fear of failure?

Candidates who suffer from performance anxiety can benefit from formative assessment. Regular positive feedback through this type of assessment helps them perform better. This confirmation reduces their anxiety about the actual (final) assessment.

Paper or digital formative assessment?

With a paper-based formative assessment, the possibilities for feedback are limited. For example, an answer sheet with the correct answer and explanation is used. If you opt for digital formative assessment, you can use, for example, multimedia or different closed question types.

Not only is giving feedback easier via digital testing. Distributing questions is also much easier. We previously wrote a blog about the advantages of digital testing.
