Online surveying with online proctoring

Global digitisation is developing at breakneck speed. Certainly also in the field of testing and examining. Online proctoring, for instance, enables online proctoring. You can read more about this technique in this article.

Traditional surveillance

Everyone is familiar with taking paper exams. Here, the teacher or invigilator keeps a close eye on everything to see if everything is going well. Alongside this traditional physical form of surveillance, online proctoring is now also a possibility.

Online surveillance

Good testing software allows you to take a test digitally. You can then choose to take this test at a central exam location with physical supervision. There is also the option to take the exam from home, office or another obvious location under online supervision. Through this online proctoring, not only is the exam made available digitally, but also various measures are taken to prevent fraud. Roughly speaking, there are three forms of online surveillance.

1. Live

A first form of supervision is ‘live proctoring’. Here, a remote supervisor (the proctor) can directly intervene or correct if applicable. This form of surveillance is most similar to the physical form of supervision. The candidate is continuously monitored by means of an audio recording, a view of the screen, a webcam and/or a mobile phone with a camera.

2. Record and check

A second option you can use is ‘store and monitor’. As a supervisor, you can review a candidate's complete test performance (including screen recording and audio). So monitoring here does not take place ‘live’, but afterwards.

3. Automated

A third option is ‘automated proctoring’. Here, the online surveillance software performs various checks to spot irregularities. You can think of abnormal behaviour or environmental noises. This allows a supervisor (proctor) to identify possible fraud afterwards and take action if required.

Conclusion - online surveillance in exams

The possibilities of digital supervision of exams have been greatly evaluated over the years. Depending on the (social) importance of an exam, organisations choose the type of supervision that fits best. Of course, a combination of physical and online supervision is also possible.
