How does online proctoring work?

The basis of every test or examination is the same. A candidate takes an assigned exam to map knowledge and/or skills acquired. Online proctoring enables supervised remote proctoring of exams. But how exactly does online proctoring work and how do you keep digital monitoring on an exam?

Monitoring via online proctoring

Unlike when you proctor an exam at a fixed test location, online proctoring lacks physical supervision. Audio and video recordings are made of the candidate, allowing supervision to be designed in three different ways:

Live monitoring

In the first variant of online proctoring, you keep live monitoring. The proctor (supervisor) - as in a physical test - monitors the progress of the test in real time. Does something unacceptable happen? Then immediate action can be taken and the exam of the candidate concerned can even be stopped.

Storage and control

The second variant of online proctoring is storage and control. This involves recording images and sounds of the exam taking. The proctor is given the opportunity to watch the test afterwards. Again, in the event of fraud (afterwards), action can be taken.

Automated proctoring

The third and final variant of online proctoring is automated proctoring. In this variant, monitoring is automated. Specific software is used to identify possible fraud. To determine whether it is actually fraud, the proctor checks the image and sound fragments.

Which variant suits you?

Depending on the type of assessment, one variant of online proctoring may be better suited than another. It is also possible to use a combination of the different variants.
